Crushin': Something New Version: Prince Harry

OK, I know you're probably looking at the screen like "who in the hell..." but I've got a lil' crush on Prince Harry. I don't know if it's his rebelliousness or the David Caruso shade of red hair...either way I've got a mini Jones for the Prince of Wales. What????

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day12- Bootcamp are you with me!?!!??

Day 12, just as I predicted Wild Child did not show up today. Unfortunately, we had to pay for it. We did about 15 minutes worth of hard exercises for him. I'm fed up with him. Two of my click members were injured so it makes it hard for me to get pumped up when Wild Child is not there and when my team is hurt. Day 12 was cool, I am really getting stronger and more agile.

Operation Healthy Body (Joan's Version)

Ok, once again…I don’t have a version this week! I know, I know I suck but next week I will have a version! I told you guys I was the workout rebel so you have to pray more for me! Please keep praying my strength. LMAO

Tomorrow we will be cooking @ Macy’s and I hope to see you there! We just cooked the dish we will be making tomorrow and you guys are in for a treat! The dish we’re going to prepare is easy to make and oh soooooo good! See you tomorrow!

Oh and don’t forget to purchase your tickets to our premier Get ‘Em Girl’s presents Girls’ Bite Out – Thursday, April 17th - 6pm @ The Westside Loft!

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day11 The Return Of Wild Child

Today was a good day. It was so cold outside 19 degrees however the windchill made it feel as if it was below zero. However, after a tongue lashing I left on Wild Child's voicemail, he returned to class. I was happy to look to my left and see him. He was focused and full of energy. We ran a mile and a half and I improved on my time by three minutes so I went from 21 minutes and some change to 18 minutes and 32 seconds...go meeeeeee! Just when I thought the torture was over, drill sergeant has us do crawls from one side of the football field to another. This is not the crawl you did on you knees as a kid either..lol..All in all today was great..too bad it was so cold outside that my water had frozen solid, so I had nothing to drink, lol

Operation Healthy Body: Day ? (Jeniece's Version)

At this point of Operation Healthy Body, the lack of carbs have shut down about 72% of brain function so I don't know what day it is...I'm just going!

I'm pretty much still out of commission when it comes to working out, hopefully I'll get back on track next week.

Anyway, here is the recipe for Roasted Spaghetti Squash:

2 1/2 pound spaghetti squash
Olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
Using a very sharp knife, carefully slice the spaghetti squash in half lengthwise. Using a spoon, remove the seeds from the squash, drizzle with olive oil, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Place the squash cut side down on a baking sheet and poke holes in the skin with a fork.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until fully cooked. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle, using a fork, begin scraping the strands of the squash into a separate dish. Serve immediately drizzled with additional olive oil.

Makes 4 servings.

Enjoy!

Get 'Em Girl of the Week: Etwin Gordon

It would all start with a sudden urge to make new dishes. This urge found Etwin Gordon taking courses at The Art Institute of New York City in Culinary Arts Management. Etwin initially wanted to go into the catering business, but after taking a pastry course she quickly changed her mind. “Baking cakes is what I wanted to do” is the motto that Etwin chooses to live by. She finished up at AINYC with an AOS in Culinary Management and a Certificate in Pastry Arts.

While taking the Pastry courses Etwin would bring my baked goods to her co-workers. They loved it! She was asked to make a Red Velvet cake for a bake sale at work and this would be the start of Essential Cakes. Why Essential Cakes? Is a cake not the most essential element of any party? If anyone said that word of mouth wasn’t the best way to get the word out, they were wrong. The word has been spreading ever since and her telephone hasn’t stopped ringing since. Etwin takes great pride in everything she bakes and puts all her heart and soul into it...or as the saying goes, she puts her foot in it!

Etwin’s specialty is southern staple, Red Velvet Cake, but Essential Cakes have a list of many other cake choices. While EssentialCakes.com is still in the making, for more information go to myspace.com/essentialcakes for photos, cake selections and pricing. Essential Cakes makes cakes for any occasion; birthdays, baby showers, weddings or just because.

5th Annual Hip-Hop Summit Action Network's Action Awards

Snoop and I

Dr. Benjamin Chavis and Valeisha Butterfield

LL Cool J and Ciara

Chris Lighty

Pharell, Brian- Micahel Cox, and Dr. Ben

Last night Joan and I attended the 5th Annual Hip-Hop Summit Action Network's Action Award. I had a ball.
The energy was great and we were there for a purpose. Snoop, Ciara, Jim Jones, Chris Lighty, Dug E. Fresh and Mellody Hobson were honored for their action in the community. The theme of the event was "Empowering Lives" and I felted very empowered after attending last nights event. I know I am here for a purpose and last night made me feel as if I need to do more to inspire our youth. A lot of times the media tends to focus on the negative in Hip Hop and the positive aspects always gets swept under the rug. However, tonight I gained a new respect for some of the honorees!

Stay tuned for more about last nights event later today...

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day10

After eating all of the great food at the HSAN Action Awards, I was feeling very slump-ish in the morning, but I rolled out of bed and made it to class. We were missing two members, so I knew push-ups were just around the corner. My "Wild Child" of the group, seems to have gone AWOL. He has been missing for 4 days, therefore we had to do 8 count body builders 32 times (8 times for each day he was missing). Now I hate 8 count body builder. For those of you who need a demonstration of what 8count body builders are click here: http://www.expertvillage.com/video/620_calisthenics-8-count-body-builder.htm
Now for some reason I just felt like opening my mouth and speaking up. I told our Drill Sergeant that we did everything possible to get this man to class and I couldn't understand why we were being held responsible. She then pulled up chairs and told us all to sit down except for one young lady. She made her do them all by herself because she was originally the one they told would be responsible for our "Wild Child." I felt bad, but such is life.
I am starting to get better with my push ups (yeahhhh me!). My body is very sore, but I am making it. I am starting to see a little bit of results, however I really need to focus on changing my diet. Thursday we are at the track...I am so not looking forward to it...lol

DVR Alert!

A Raisin in the Sun

Audra McDonald, Sean Combs, Sanaa Lathan and Phylicia Rashad star in the ABC television adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, which airs tonight at 8 PM ET so set your DVR (if your not going to be home).
Kenny Leon, who staged the recent Broadway revival, directs his original stars for the ABC-TV movie, which also features Bill Nunn, Ron Cephas Jones, Sean Patrick Thomas and John Stamos.
"The ground-breaking drama portrays a brief period of time in the life of the Younger family as they anxiously await the arrival of a $10,000 life insurance check," reads an ABC release. "Everyone in the family has their own ideas about how they plan to use their new-found wealth and are eager for their new lives to start."
The film features the cast of the 2004 revival, including Combs as Walter Lee Younger, McDonald as Ruth Younger, Rashad as Lena Younger and Lathan as Beneatha Younger. McDonald and Rashad earned Tony Awards for their performances; Lathan was Tony-nominated.
A Raisin in the Sun premiered in 1959. It was the first Broadway play written by, directed by and starring African-Americans. Lloyd Richards directed a cast that included Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Ruby Dee and Louis Gossett — who also appeared in the 1961 film version. The play was also adapted for a 1989 TV movie starring Danny Glover and Esther Rolle and also served as source material for the musical, Raisin.

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day9-Back in the Saddle

So I am back from NC, my Grandmother is doing well..and now I am back to business. I warned the class that I did not have the energy to push them so they were going to have to step it up. Did they listen..no, but we made it through. My "wild child" was not in class again for the fourth time. I was really upset because I called him on Sunday and he said he was coming. He will probably never come back after the message I left on his voicemail yesterday. I really need to start changing my eating habits so that I can get the best results. I went grocery shopping yesterday so that I would have a better food selection. After class I have to rush home and get dressed because I am volunteering with WEEN for the HSAN awards (Hip Hop Summit Action Network)....it is going to be a long day...

Operation Healthy Body: Day 8- I miss my troop

Okay, so I'm in NC about to go to the hospital so I can be there when my Grandma comes out of surgery. I was unable to make class today, however I did call to check on my team. I had intentions of working out this morning, however it was raining cats and dogs outside. So I missed my workout today. Maybe I will find something to do tomorrow. I got a chance to sleep until 12:30pm (except for the three times Jeniece called to talk to me at 7am in the morning). I hear it is snowing there...I'm glad I missed it. Speaking of missing...I miss Jeniece and Joan, two days out of the office has taken a toll on me.

Shakara aka Lone Ranger

Operation Healthy Body (Joan's Version)

Ok, I don’t have a version!!! :( However, I will be back on my workout schedule as of Monday morning @ 5:30am when I return to strictly cardio @ True Control Fitness. I must admit, I’m the rebel when it comes to working out so I need an extra push to get out the door in the mornings. I’m sooooo determined to go through with this class and so I can bring out my inner Beyoncé when we go to the Essence Festival in July!

Crushin': Marcus Samuelsson

So I got a chance to meet Marcus Samuelsson on Monday at the Fairway Market by my house, can I tell you that celebrity chefs are to me what a first-round draft pick stumbling out of the club in a drunken stupor is to a money-hungry groupie! LOL, seriously...I'm in awe of the Ethiopian-born chef, not just because he can cook his ass off, but because he overcame adversity at such a young age to become one of the most reveled and sought after chefs of this generation!

Operation Healthy Body: Day 5 (Jeniece's Version)

OK...my back is really in a funk! It comes in spurts and it's getting on my nerves. My acupuncturist is out of commission, does anyone have a reference for one here in NYC?

Other than that, everything is good. The girls and I had a really good business meeting yesterday in Midtown with Dr. Ben Chavis and Valesia Butterfield of HSAN...looking forward to great things to come from it! Afterwards the ladies took me out for a birthday lunch. I enjoyed a 9 oz. rib eye, green beans, and salad while those two heffas dined on the finest Cambodian brownie bowls, with ice cream, and fresh whipped cream lol. Seriously, they went hard! That's right I'm telling! The loaves of wheat bread just kept coming and the bellinis just kept flowing...all while I chewed quietly on my green beans and sipped my Equal-laced iced tea! lmao.

However, when I got home that evening, I did indulge in a scoop of Sugar-Free Cool Whip (which taste very similar to vanilla ice cream when frozen hard) and I made a chocolate sauce with fat-free half-and-half and 20 semi-sweet chocolate chips...YUM!

Happy Birthday to me!

Jeniece

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day7-

Okay I got to keep this short, but sweet because I am about to get on the road to NC because my Grandma is having her operation (please keep her in your prayers). Today was cool, two of our troop members were missing so we had a lot of attention focused on us. For the most part we did well. I am noticing it is becoming easier to get up in the morning and get through the work outs. I am sad that I will miss class tommorrow, however my troop will hold me down.

Come out, get your books signed, experience great food and fun. If you still haven't purchased the Get 'Em Girl's Guide..you will have a chance to purchase a copy on March 1st at 1pm.

Black History Month: Oprah Winfrey

Ms. Oprah Winfrey

If there is one thing you need to know about the Get ‘Em Girl’s is that “we love Oprah”! Before we even had a business plan one of our main goals was to be guests on The Oprah Winfrey Show and hang out with Ms. Oprah! One of the many reasons we decided to work-out and get fit is because we want to look really good when we are invited to the show!

Oprah Winfrey came from a humble background and humble beginnings to become one of America’s favorite women. One of the many reasons I love Oprah is because she has a purpose and has used her fame and wealth to positively influence the lives of people in need across the world.

In 1986 The Oprah Winfrey Show entered national syndication and quickly became the highest rated talk show in television history. The Oprah Winfrey Show has remained the number one talk show for the past 22 consecutive years.

Ms. Winfrey has not just limited herself just to her talk show, she has also successfully established HARPO Studios in Chicago, and she is Founder & Editorial Director of O, The Oprah Magazine, Broadway Producer of The Color Purple and a great philanthropist. The Oprah Winfrey Foundation has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the US and in Africa. In January 2007 the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls – South Africa was opened.

Over the past 22 years we have fallen in love the media diva because she continues to enlighten, entertain, uplift and inspire all of us.

Operation Healthy Body: Day 4 (Jeniece's Version)

Today is my birthday so your girl is off! Actually, I threw my back out last night...see what had happened was I've been doing these strip tease aerobics and when I went down to do the body roll...my back didn't want to roll up! lmao. Seriously, your girl was hurt I went too hard on the treadmill and my sciatica shut me down!

I still made a delicious carb-free meal and here's the recipe for the Parmesan White Bean Mash that was mentioned in the newsletter!

2 (19 ounce) cans cannelini beans, drained and rinsed
1 tablespoons olive oil
3 small cloves roasted garlic, mashed
1/4 cup chicken broth or water
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup fat-free half-and-half
3 tablespoons grated parmesan

Combine the cannelini beans, olive oil, garlic, and chicken broth to a medium saucepan. Season with salt and pepper to taste and cook over medium-low heat just until the beans are tender and the chicken broth is boiling, about 15 minutes.

Remove from heat and transfer to a medium sized bowl. Add the butter, half-and-half, and parmesan; mash with a potato masher until smooth leaving some beans slightly lumpy. Serve immediately with additional salt and pepper and butter if you choose.

Cheri Dennis @ the Apple Store

Cheri did her thang last night at the Apple store in SOHO, NYC. I was pleasantly surprised at how packed the store was. Some NYC schools are on recess so there were a lot of young fans in attendance. As you can see above, Cheri looked great and since I was there in person I can tell you she sounded great too. She sung a couple of songs off of her new album. Last years hit song "I Love You" really got the crowd amped and to close out she performed Portrait of Love. Gorilla Zoe came on stage to support her even though they did not have the remix for him to perform.
Ladies, we need to support Cheri when her album drops next Tuesday, February 26. She has been on Bad Boy for about 8 years and this is her first released project. She has been patient and loyal...I admire that about her. She has a great aura about her and she can really sing. So go pick a copy of Cheri Dennis' debut album "In and Out of Love" on February 26, she is Get 'Em Girl approved!
Shakara

PS- Ra-Fael Blanco, great job! Also, much love to the Bad Boy street team. It was cold outside, but you guys were putting in work. Obama could probably benefit from having you all on the campaign trail..lol

This week I'll be starting with strictly cardio AGAIN...YEAH!! I recieved a call from Keisher last night and she suggested that Jeniece and I continue with strictly cardio and I agreed. So stayed tuned.

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day6-TheTrack

Okay today is day 6 and I am hurt. Mentally I am fine (unlike Monday my spirit was hurt because I wasn't the star in class). However my butt and legs are sore. Today I got dressed in layers because the Boot Camp Click was going out to the track today for our first run. At first I was a little scared because it was cold and I thought my nose would be running, however everything went fine. We worked out alot first and then we ran. The goal is for us to run a mile and a half in 15 minutes. Today I ran it in 21minutes 18 seconds, which is not that bad considering the track was icy and we could not run on the inside which they said added about two minutes to our time). I definitely need to purchase some arch supports because I have flat feet and they hurt a little. I soaked last night with some Epsom Salt and I will probably be soaking again. Tomorrow is an off day so maybe I can go out and play tonight. I really need to go grocery shopping so that I can get my diet right.

Shakara aka Lone Ranger aka Master at Arms

Operation Healthy Body (Jeniece's Version)

So, I know last week I told you that Joan and I were going back to bootcamp...well I lied! Seriously, Shakara called me up on Monday letting me know that we would not be meeting at the track so I laid back down. When I got back to the office, she was beat down! I mean hurt, which in turn reinforced my reservations about joining back. So I will continue my journey through walking, running, and using my elliptical machine every morning. I'm trying to lose 40 pounds in 4 months...I'll keep you posted.

On a lighter note, I will be incorporating healthful recipes with my blogs beginning some time this week, so stay tuned...

We will continue to cheer for Shakara's Boot Camp journey! Go Shak, Go Shak! lol

Where's The Game?

I know that the CW has been on some ole bullcrap for the past week canceling shows all willy-nilly so I'm a little on edge about my show The Game? I'm going through withdrawals for real. I'm about to set up a support group for others like me (there are others like me, right?)

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day5-BREAKBREAKDOWN

Day 5, week 2...today Drill Sergeant Dennis broke me down. I was doing so well, but today she just went in. I damn near cursed at her today. If any of you have ever done any exercise that has to do with the word plank..then you know how I feel. As a team, the Boot Camp Click is holding tight. We are really starting to gel together. This morning I had to pick my "Wild Child" up because if I didn’t he would have been late as usual. I really need to start trusting my body. I should be able to carry my weight better than I do. My body finally hurts and I was sweating profusely. Only to get home and find out my hot water is not working. So I was stuck washing up at the sink in ice cold water. Hopefully I will get a real bath today.

Running for my life!

Today was a good day. I got my run on this morning and I feel great...so great that I've decided to give Boot Camp another try. Monday is the day when we buckle up our boots and head back to basic training! (Pray for us.)

To be continued...

Congrats to Shakara

Jeniece and I are so proud of Shakara (being named Master of Arms for True Control Fitness). Shakara has proven what hard work and perseverance can do for you! :-)

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day4- MASTER OF ARMS

Day 4 was tough getting up. I slept bad last night so I was not too happy when my alarm went off at 4:30am. I was dragging and almost got to class late. 5am is considered on time at 5:05am you are officially late and at 5:15am you can no long join the troop. Today's class was tough however we talked about nutrition for about 30 minutes so that gave us some rest time. Maybe tomorrow I will tell you all about what we learned. We all chose a name for our troop. So going hence forth our name is now "BOOT CAMP CLICK." The most exciting part of the class was I was named Master of Arms for the BOOT CAMP CLICK! The troop voted and anonymously they picked me. As Master of Arms I am in charge or roll call and motivating the BOOT CAMP CLICK. I am excited about my position and I hope I can make my troop proud. I guess I will have to start getting up at 4:15am to make sure I get there on time because now I have to set an example.

Shakara

PS We had to do 30 push-ups again because Jeniece and Joan were not in class. I informed the Boot Camp Click that we should just get use to doing 30 push-ups because they are not coming back I'm going to be so cut!

Operation Healthy Body: Day 3 (Jeniece's Version)

Today I ran 1 MILE! (Go Me! Go Me!) Ok, ok...I didn't actually run the mile, I ran 1/4 of a mile and walked the rest! Alright, so I ran an 1/8 of a mile...the point is I got my butt up and put foot to pavement and got it movement GO ME! LOL

E, don't drink too much wine tonight my brother, because you will be at the track tomorrow!

Jeniece

Happy Valentine's Day

To all my Get 'Em Girls and Official G's...I wish you a very happy Valentine's Day! Personally, I think Valentine's Day is so '80's and I choose to celebrate Sweetest Day with my future baby's father! For those of you who aren't in the know, Sweetest Day is observed on the 3rd Saturday in October and was originated (and is widely celebrated) in the Midwest.

Anyway, enough raining on everyone else's parade...have fun, be safe, and eat enough chocolate for me!

J

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day3

Wednesday was an off day..so today I was back in Boot Camp. I was like 1 minute late so I had to do 20 push ups (my arms are going to be so nice..lol). Today we also had to do push ups because Joan and Jeniece quit. Our drill sergeants said if we had all bonded maybe they would have tried to stay. I started to speak up, but this discipline I am learning made me say nothing. If I had spoken I would have said there is nothing any of us could have done. Joan and Jeniece are very stubborn and head strong..when they make up their minds no one can turn them around. I am trying to emphasize and sympathize but I can't. I just have to worry and be responsible for myself now..(accept things I can not change).

Nevertheless, on Day 3 my boot camp troop bonded. We actually picked a name and tomorrow I will update you all with the name. As far as my body, I feel good. I am noticing that I don't have an attitude in the morning when I have to wake up at 4:25am. My body is not that sore except for in the glutes area...I hope that means my squats are working (wink).
Signing out until tomorrow....Shakara aka Lone Ranger

My Grandma is not doing to well, she is in the hospital...so please keep my family in your prayers. Thanks!

2 Days after Boot Camp and my body still hurts from push-ups! We had a "wise guy" in our class that caused us to do extra work because of his sarcastic remarks. Can you imagine doing 20 extra push-ups becuase of something someone else said???!!!!!

I still say the ladies @ True Control Fitness are providing a great service; however, I may have to stick to the cardio class (it's a little more my speed).

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day2

Lonelyyyyyyyyyy I am so lonelyyyyyyyy, I have nobodyyyyyyyyyy....Day 2 of Boot camp was tough I didn't have my girls to hold me down, but I got up and was on time. However, it was so cold outside that the lock to the gym door was frozen. Therefore, Drill Instructor Dennis started warming us up outside. It was 19 degrees outside and my simple butt only had on a windbreaker jacket over my hoodie and no gloves. Thank God I brought my scarf out! We never did make it inside so class was cut short about 30minutes. We did get a work out and when I got home, I went to my gym and worked out on the elliptical and did some abs work. I am so proud of myself! Tomorrow is my day off from class, but I plan to still get up early and workout...providing I don't stay out too late at Spotlight Live seeing Lil Mo perform.

Operation Healthy Body: Day 1 (Jeniece's Version)

Ok, so today was the first day of Bootcamp and I must tell you...it was grueling! I was not prepared for what was about to take place. Now, mind you I was forewarned prior to going but for some strange reason I didn't think it would be that bad. So we get there on time (5:00 a.m .on the dot) and I'm thinking great...wrong! As soon as I walked in I knew we were going to have problems. Lisa calls out the fact that I have gum in my mouth (I'm thinking damn, I just rolled out of bed, my breath may be a little tart...give me a break) but she wasn't just like "spit out the gum" homegirl was like..."Get rid of the gum...you're chewing like a cow..." *record scratch* Who in the Richard Simmons is this chick talking to? I'm not one of those super-sensitive big girls, but damn if you gone call me a cow after I've dragged my ass up in there at 5:00 a.m....sh*t feed me first!

Next, let the Patriot Games begin. Call me foolish, but I thought the boot camp reference was just to the type of exercises that were going to be taking place. I didn't know they were going Full Metal Jacket style...I felt like Private Pyle up in that joint! Between rolling on the floor like beached whales and the push ups for forgetting to call them Ma'am Jeniece (and Joan) have gone AWOL! You can find me at the track at Riverbank State Park or NYSC (and Joan at Lucille Roberts)...hell after that I might give Bikram Yoga another try!

Shakara aka Private Joker, good luck...the Get 'Em Girls will be rooting for you! And to the ladies of True Control Fitness...keep it up, for the folks who are disciplined for that type of regimen, this IS the program for you (if you have an inner-Beyonce, this is just the class to bring it out)

OPERATION HEALTHYBODY:Bootcamp Day1

Today started our first day of boot camp. Surprisingly we all showed up on time. I am not going to say I enjoyed the 1 1/2 hr class, however I made it through. Getting up at 5am was kind of tough. The toughest part for me was remembering to address our instructors as "yes ma’am" or "yes Drill Instructor." They also took our measurements (which I will not be revealing ...lol). I know we were instructed that we may need to purchase knee pads...so I will definitely be purchasing some this weekend. The knee pads will be used long after class, because when I get my body tight I can re-in act my favorite Janet Jackson video "Pleasure Principal"...lol. After tons of drills, push ups, sit-ups and yes ma’ams class was over and I was proud of the girls and myself. However, Jeniece and Joan decided this was the first and last day of boot camp. Of course I was livid, because they always come up with these bright ideas and then drop out (Bikram Yoga). I fussed at them for a while, but they stood their grounds....so I guess I will just be the Lone Ranger from now on. Beyonce had to leave Kelly and Michelle eventually..lmao

Operation Healthy Body

Week 2

This week has been a bit of a challenge especially since I stayed up late Sunday night watching the Superbowl; I had a major problem when it was time for me to get up and head to the gym Monday morning. Now its Jeniece’s turn…she’s sick and hasn’t been able to work out therefore Shakara and I have been enduring the arduous workouts. I must say although it’s A LOT of work I feel great!
